Pick A Good Protein Powder For Dieting

All dieters will be more successful at weight loss when they eat several small meals per day. In an ideal world you should eat every three hours for maximum results when dieting. The definition of a meal does need to change. Instead of the usual meat and potato high-calorie meal, the ideal meal is small and always includes carb, fiber and protein. For someone who wants to reduce their weight, it should be 300 calories or less. Protein powders can be convenient & quick.  They can serve the purpose of a meal very easily. All protein powders are not created equal, though.

Protein Powder Protein Sources

Soy protein is a good source of protein for dieters, as it is fat-free and low on the glycemic index. Casein and whey, both made from milk, are also good protein sources and excellent at muscle repair. They are a great source for after workout meals. Egg white proteins are one of the most balanced protein sources for amino acids, although they are a bit harder to find in the conventional health food store. Rice protein is not as protein rich and is very chalky, so it is not one of my favorite protein supplements.

How To Pick A Good Protein Supplement For Dieting

  • Avoid preservatives. Many protein blends include potassium benzoate, potassium sorbate.
  • Avoid chemicals. Monosodium glutamate, non-nutritive sweeteners, and other chemicals increase your desire for sugar or another “meal” quicker. Finding a “clean protein powder” can sometimes be a challenge. I use the one that Eniva offers. CLICK HERE For Eniva
  • Check for sugars. Do not use any protein powder that has corn sugars, such as high fructose corn syrup or others. Protein powders for weight loss should have no more than 7 grams of natural sugars per portion.
  • Avoid aluminum cans. If you are buying a pre-prepared supplement, go for drink boxes or bottles.
      8 oz. skim milk
      ½ banana (or ½ cup blueberries)
      sprinkle of nutmeg
      tsp. pure vanilla extract
      1 scoop/portion (as indicated on the package) of pure whey isolate protein powder
  • Drink Slowly To Lose Weight

    It is always better to chew your meals than it is to drink them. Having said that, protein shakes can be an excellent source of a quick meal when on the run. Drink your meal slowly so that you become satisfied. The ideal protein shake, like every meal, includes carb, protein and fiber. Use your protein shake as just one of your meals when on the run.     Low Calorie-High Protein Diet Shake

    This is a yummy chemical-free protein shake that you can change to your specific tastes. Use any kind of fruit you want.  You can make it really low-cal by using water instead of milk.
    In blender combine:

    6 oz. skim milk

    1/2 banana

    1 tsp. vanilla

    1 portion clean-plain protein powder

    4-5 ice cubes

    dash cinnamon

10 Natural Weight Loss Tips

  1. Eat 6 small meals per day instead of 3 big meals.
  2. Do not eliminate a food group from your diet (like eat no-carb or no-fat diets).
  3. Include protein, carb, fat and fiber in every meal.
  4. Eat high fiber meals.
  5. Drink at least half your body weight in ounces of plain water daily.
  6. Avoid non-nutritive sweeteners (even though these are no-calorie, it is proven that they actually set you up for craving sugary foods.* There are plenty of studies showing this-one recent one is: Purdue University Study 2008)
  7. Sleep well at night. A good night’s sleep is essential to weight loss. Sleep deprivation can actually increase hunger. When you eat a small portion of carbs about an hour before bed time it will improve serotonin during sleep.
  8. Drink caffeine in smaller portions rather than in big cups. This will keep your energy boosted all day and burn more calories instead of a big spike in the morning.
  9. Don’t drink your calories. It is always better to eat real food, such as an orange, instead of orange juice.
  10. Avoid chemical-laden foods. If you do not know what it is, then chances are it is a chemical. Chemicals have no nutritive value and cause food cravings.

This clean-out-the-fridge stir-fry is fun, fast and healthy. It is different every time you make, it so you never get tired of this “recipe”. Chock-full of natural high fiber vegetables, this is a calorie-burning, nutrient-laden diet meal that burns calories. Many veggies are high fiber. Some vegetables burn more calories to digest them than you get when you eat them. These types of foods are called negative or zero calorie foods. Even thought they are assisting you in weight loss by burning so many calories during digestion, they are still packed with nutrients. This recipe is perfect for weight loss programs.

Diet Recipe Stir-Fry

Italian Pasta Stir fry (or whatever flavor you want)

Pull every stray vegetable out of your fridge to create a different stir-fry every day. Use the ingredients listed as guidelines. Do not be afraid to substitute ingredients and spices. This recipes can be made with any ingredients you have in the fridge. Any veg or starch can be substituted. I have made it with cooked leftover brown rice, pasta or white potatoes. The same with the veggies — anything goes, and the more veggies the better. Lotsa fiber!! Add a protein of your choice to create a balanced meal. For the least amount of calories use fish or chicken breast. You will be shocked at how yummy and filling it is.

1 pkg. (¾-1 lb.) whole wheat rotini pasta-cooked
1 Tbs. olive oil
1 sm. red onion-sliced
1 lg. carrot-sliced
1 sm. yellow squash-matchstick
1 sm. zucchini-matchstick
1 Tbs. fresh basil-chopped (or 1 tsp. dry)
1 Tbs. fresh oregano (or 1 tsp. dry)
2 clove garlic-sliced
3 plum tomatoes
2 oz. high quality fresh parmesan cheese (you only need a little of the real stuff)
1 cup water from cooking pasta

1. Cook pasta and reserve 1 cup cooking liquid when draining.
2. Cut all vegetables and herbs before starting to cook.
3. Heat oil in stir fry skillet, add onion, and carrot. Stir fry for 2 minutes.
4. Add squashes, garlic, herbs and stir fry 1 minute.
5. Add cooked pasta, and water, toss until hot.
6. Add tomatoes, and cheese, toss until cheese melts.
